Another way to approach the season is to decorate your house and table with simpler, more natural pieces.

Set aside a day or two close to the big day, make sure it isn’t raining, grab your secateurs, a bag or bucket, gloves, boots and off you go to the nearest wood or deep hedgerow. Gather branches of evergreens, pinecones, hollies, brambles, seedheads and bring them back for decorating the entire house.

Hang branches with ribbon or go to town with wire and create wreathes. Mantels, windowsills, huge vases can all be filled (for free!) with countryside bounty. Split logs decorated with candle, pinecones, ribbon and twigs make the most charming of homemade gifts. All fun and easy!
